Paul Merson delivers stinging criticism of Crystal Palace ahead of Newcastle United test

Paul Merson has been heavily critical of Crystal Palace ahead of their game against Newcastle United this weekend.

The Eagles travel to face the Magpies at St James' Park this weekend, with the two sides separated by just one point and one place in the Premier League table after a 2-0 defeat for Palace in midweek against Tottenham.

And the Sky Sports pundit has been critical of the Eagles' performance at Tottenham's new stadium on Wednesday night - and their performance as a whole so far this season.

"I am disappointed with Palace. Out of all the teams at the bottom they are the disappointment because they should not be where they are," Merson said in his weekly predictions feature for the Sky Sports website.

"How do you go to Manchester City and win 3-2, when nobody beats City at home, and then be where you are in the league and go to Tottenham and get rinsed in midweek? It wasn't even really a game."

Merson says he was also disappointed by Newcastle in their 2-0 defeat against his old side Arsenal on Monday night, with the Magpies' performance described as "poor" by the pundit.

He said: "Newcastle had a load of fans come down to Arsenal on Monday and you were thinking 'why don't you have a go?'

"I thought it was poor. They are better than that and have the ammunition to hurt teams."

And Merson thinks Newcastle will claim all three points tomorrow (Saturday) when the two sides meet, with the former Arsenal midfielder predicting a 2-1 victory for Rafa Benitez's side.

"I think Newcastle win with home advantage, but both these teams should be safe because Cardiff won't get enough points," he said.
