Paul Merson delivers his verdict on Manchester United boss Solskjaer after Leicester defeat

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in a "spot of bother" in regards to his future, following Manchester United's 4-2 defeat at Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

Despite taking the lead in stunning fashion through Mason Greenwood's fourth goal of the season, United saw the game flipped on its head, with Leicester scoring once either side of half time to secure a 2-1 lead.

With less than ten minutes left on the clock, United thought they had done enough to earn a point, drawing level through Marcus Rashford, who marked his long-awaited return to action in style. However, Leicester were to have the final say, immediately restoring their lead through Jamie Vardy, before making it 4-2 in stoppage time through Patson Daka.

The defeat in the Midlands has left United winless in their last three Premier League games, meaning the pressure is now beginning to mount on Solskjaer, who was backed heavily by the United board in the summer transfer window.

For Merson, the defeat to Leicester could spell serious trouble for Solskjaer, who was criticised by the Sky Sports pundit for some of his in-game management.

"I think he is in a spot of bother," Merson told Sky Sports. "I said before this game, if he can get through November and he is still in a job, that, for me, means that Man United have every chance of winning the Premier League, because they have some shocking fixtures.

"This was the start of it. This was the start of it and they have been beaten by four goals to two. They thoroughly deserved it. This was not a smash and grab from Leicester.

"They went 1-0 behind and then the game was end-to-end with Leicester probably just nicking it. They then went 2-1 up when [Caglar] Soyuncu scored, which looked offside.

"They were 2-1 down and he [Solskjaer] took [Nemanja] Matic off and brought [Scott] McTominay on. He took off Greenwood, who scored the goal and always looked a threat, and brought on [Jesse] Lingard. Then they got back in the game out of nothing and it’s 2-2.

"But 15 seconds after the restart they were 3-2 down and that was it after that, and then Daka scored.

"I think they are struggling, Man United, and I said it before the game that I saw Leicester winning the match. For me, I think they are struggling. I think Arsenal could finish in the top-four above them and I haven’t changed my mind."
