Paul Merson delivers brutal Edu verdict after Arsenal complete Takehiro Tomiyasu transfer

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that he would do a better job than technical director Edu.

The Brazilian eventually signed six players over the course of the transfer window, spending in excess of £150million - more than any other Premier League side managed.

Still, the Gunners' spending spree has failed to positively impact results on the pitch as Mikel Arteta's side currently sit 20th in the league table having lost all three of their Premier League matches thus far, failing to score a single goal in the process.

The north London club will be hoping to regroup over the international break before they face newly-promoted Norwich, who currently are one place ahead of them in 19th, on September 11.

Now, Merson has lamented Edu on Sky Sports News, saying: “Tell you what I’d do a better job [than Edu]. I’ll tell you now, I could do both [Soccer Saturday and Director of Football], if you’re successful you play on Sundays."

When he was asked if he was happy with the Gunners' transfer dealings this window, the former England international was equally unsure.

"Only time will tell, I do like Ben White it’s not his problem they paid a lot of money for him but I do like him," Merson added.

"The goalie not too sure about - hope I’m wrong - but he’s let in more goals than any goalkeeper in the country, it’s a horrible stat. I’m in that and he’s conceded more than me.

"My only problem with Arsenal is they buy players but they never beat anyone to that player.

"No one is after that player, they were telling me about that lad from Bologna, he’s a right-back, €23million (£19.7million), from Bologna, why aren’t Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan buying him, Lazio, Roma. For me, I don’t get it, it’s bad business and now Willian's gone."
