Paul Merson claims Liverpool have done what Man City could never this season

Paul Merson says Liverpool do not get the credit they deserve for being in a title race this season.

The Reds' season has been blighted by injuries and they may be without a senior centre-back for their game against West Ham on Sunday.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out long-term, with Fabinho missing the midweek win over Spurs with a muscle injury and Joel Matip picking up ankle ligament damage in the victory.

Despite this, Jurgen Klopp's side are not out of the title race, with their 3-1 win over Spurs underlining the quality the Reds are still able to call upon.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson argued that no other team in the Premier League could be put in the position Liverpool have found themselves in and still challenge for the title.

He said: “I think they’re back. They’re a good team and they’ve got too many good players.

“They’ve had 20 different partnerships at the back and they’re in the title race.

“No other team in the whole country would be able to do that, there’s no doubt about that.

“What he does, and I like what he does, when he’s got to play defenders like Henderson and Fabinho or Henderson and a young lad, he still has a go at other teams.

“He still plays the front three, he doesn’t drop one of them to bring in another defender.

“Fair play to them, they’re not getting the credit they deserve.

“With the injuries they’ve had at the back, they’re right in this title race.”
