Paul Merson brands Newcastle an 'absolute disaster' as he talks new owners and Steve Bruce

Paul Merson has branded Newcastle United an 'absolute disaster' at the moment and insists the newfound riches mean nothing without a 'plan'.

The Magpies remain winless this season and face a daunting test against Champions League winners Chelsea on Saturday.

Steve Bruce departed last week by 'mutual consent', and Graeme Jones remains in interim charge following last week's 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

Speculation over a new manager and high-profile January transfers has dominated headlines in recent days, but the immediate concern for Newcastle is attempting to close the gap to safety.

Merson has questioned the logic of the new owners' approach on Tyneside so far, and believes they were lucky to earn a draw at Selhurst Park in their last outing.

The pundit also does not understand why Bruce has been let go without a replacement for a crucial run of fixtures, and has tipped Chelsea to earn a comfortable 3-0 victory at St James' Park.

He told Sportskeeda: "I worry for Newcastle. Nothing’s changed for them – they don’t have a manager, they’re in a relegation battle, and I don’t know what’s going on. They got absolutely ripped by Crystal Palace last week and they were lucky that Benteke didn’t have his shooting boots on.

"It’s all right to come in with all this money, but you need to have a plan. They’ve sacked Steve Bruce and they’re going into tough Premier League games without a manager. I can’t believe what I’m seeing at the moment.

"Chelsea have rested most of their players this week. They made loads of changes in the Carabao Cup, and I don’t think they can be stopped this weekend. Newcastle United are an absolute disaster at the moment, and I don’t see anything but a Chelsea win here."
