Paul Merson and Chris Sutton agree on Liverpool vs Tottenham prediction in Champions League blow

Tottenham face yet another difficult test this weekend when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool. Spurs will be looking for their first win in three games with a vital three points in their Champions League hopes.

Ryan Mason's men responded to the 6-1 drubbing at Newcastle with a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Thursday. The point keeps the north Londoners' top four hopes alive, though they can't afford to drop any more points.

Victory on Merseyside on Sunday would all but end Liverpool's Champions League hopes, whilst potentially cutting the gap to Man United to three points.

Ahead of the clash, pundits have given their view on how they believe the game will play out, with not many backing Spurs to be victorious.

Paul Merson

Former Premier League forward Paul Merson has predicted another win for Jurgen Klopp's men. Speaking in his Sportskeeda column: "I've got to go with Liverpool here. They've won their last three matches on the trot. They could win all their games from here on in but even then, it's unlikely to be enough to get them a place in the Champions League.

"Spurs got booed off in the first half of the game against Manchester United. The substitutions Erik ten Hag made absolutely impeded United's momentum on Thursday night. The personnel changes brought Spurs back into the game. Otherwise, Tottenham could have really suffered.

"Liverpool seem to have worked out a formula of late. Trent has done an excellent job of late for Jurgen Klopp's side. They look hungry up front and they are playing with a lot of confidence now. If Villa beat Man United, then Liverpool have a half-chance of making it to the Champions League."

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Tottenham

Chris Sutton

Sutton has seconded Merson's prediction with his assessment. Writing on BBC Sport, he said: "In some ways, Liverpool's approach will suit Tottenham because Jurgen Klopp's side will dominate the ball and Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave gaps behind him when he goes into the centre of midfield, as he does in his new inverted role.

"Spurs showed a bit of character to fight back for a draw against Manchester United but I really can't back them to get anything here because they have been so disappointing all season.

"Liverpool are on a roll with three successive wins and they still want a top-four spot.

"To have any chance of that, the Reds need to win every game they have left - and even that probably won't be enough."

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Tottenham
