Paul Merson agrees with Ben Chilwell about Chelsea star Mason Mount ahead of Fulham showdown

When Chelsea made the decision to sack Frank Lampard towards the end of January and replace him with Thomas Tuchel, many predicted that huge changes would take place.

To a certain degree, people have not been wrong.

Tuchel quickly changed the club's formation, adopting a new-look 3-4-2-1 system, and made them defensively solid, ensuring they had a solid base to work from and slowly move forward in their development.

Another prediction that many made was that Tuchel would only want to work with the players that had been signed for big-money transfer fees, such as the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner.

That, though, could not have been further from the truth. Tuchel has given everyone a chance to prove their worth, as well as offering the likes of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger the chance to resurrect their careers at Stamford Bridge.

Another prediction that several people made was that Mason Mount would be the biggest loser of Lampard's exit and Mount's arrival.

How wrong could they have been?

Mount has been integral in Tuchel's plans so far, featuring in all but two of the 22 matches he has been in charge of so far.

As well as being crucial in Tuchel's system and philosophy, Mount, who will be looking to play a key role for England at this summer's European Championships, has also been Chelsea's top source of goals since Tuchel took charge, scoring five times.

But it isn't just the goals that have made Mount's performances so impressive. He has been the link between Chelsea's midfield and attack, making things happen, darting into space and picking out passes that Kevin De Bruyne would be proud of.

For all of those reasons and more, former Arsenal man Paul Merson has heaped praise on Mount's development this season, insisting he is the most improved player in the Premier League this season, as well as admitting that he reminds him a lot of Lampard.

"Mason Mount is the most improved player in the Premier League – and he reminds me of Frank Lampard," Merson said in his column for the Daily Star.

"He is getting better and better and has the same attitude Frank did, one hundred per cent. He’s always working hard, always trying to get better.

"Frank got accused of being the teacher’s pet as well at West Ham when Harry Redknapp was manager, and the same happened to Mason at Chelsea.

"But Lampard has been proved right about Mason Mount. It was Lampard who gave him his big chance when he was manager. And he’s taken it with both hands.

"Look how much money Chelsea spent on Kai Havertz and Timo Werner and they are nowhere near as important as Mount. ‘He’s the go-to man now, and that’s phenomenal at his age. He carries the team."

Merson is not the first person, and probably won't be the last, that has hailed Mount's development this season. Last month, Blues left-back Ben Chilwell heaped praise on his teammate for the way he is progressing, insisting he has seen a big difference in him since he arrived at Stamford Bridge from Leicester City last summer.

Chilwell told Chelsea's club website : "Before I came here me and Mase were close through the England set-up, but that was only in training and playing with him a few times a season.

"Now training with him every day, I see how good he really is. It’s not just his natural ability, but the fact he works very hard, he is very keen to learn all the time, and he is always doing extra work in the gym. He does everything he can to better himself.

"With the natural talent he has, his work-rate, the sky is the limit for him. Since I’ve come in until now, he has improved so much.

"If he keeps on doing what he is doing, scoring, assisting, staying humble, working hard, then he will be a great player for Chelsea and England for a long time."

With Mount continuing to lap up plaudits from big-name pundits and his teammates, it is clear just how well thought of he is. As both Merson and Chilwell have stated, he is a player with real quality and the sky is the limit for him.

However, he still continues to be on the receiving end of criticism by some, with many stating that he should not warrant a place in the England squad this summer.

After the way he has performed this season, how could you possibly leave him out?
