Paul Merson admits he was wrong about Carlo Ancelotti after Everton transfers

Paul Merson has admitted his first impressions of Carlo Ancelotti at Everton have been proven wrong by their summer recruitment.

Merson has been impressed by the Toffees' transfer business and has labelled Allan as the signing of the window.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson admitted he was once again proved wrong by the Toffees.

Two seasons ago, Merson was forced to backtrack over comments he made about Richarlison joining from Watford - and this time it is Ancelotti who has proved him wrong.

The outspoken pundit admitted that Everton's form last season made him question whether Ancelotti would be able to build a team good enough to compete.

But their summer window has dispelled any notion like that.

He said: “I watched them at Chelsea just before lockdown and they got beat by four and I thought, ‘My God, this is one of the top managers of all-time, surely this is not going to happen and he’s gonna have a team that keeps getting whipped up away from home’.

"But fair play to him, he’s come back and he’s gone, ‘I want him, I want him, I want him’.

"He’s got Calvert-Lewin looking top drawer. I think he’s a top drawer player anyway.

"He’s brought Rodriguez in. I think Allan is the signing of the window out of every transfer. He’s a top player, a good holding midfielder.

"When you used to play at Everton, it used to be a hard place to go - and it’s back to that. That’s what Evertonians want.

"They’re believers, who knows? They might be able to do what they did all those years ago; finish in the top four, you just never know."
