Paul Merson admits he's 'shocked' by Liverpool's interest in Ozan Kabak transfer

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has questioned Liverpool’s interest in Schalke defender Ozan Kabak.

The Reds are interested in signing the centre-back before tonight’s 11pm deadline, with a loan deal and an option to buy at the end of the season the most likely scenario.

The deal would be predicated on Schalke getting a replacement, with Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi looking likely to move to the Bundesliga club, who have won just one league game all season, on loan.

Kabak reportedly has a medical booked in Germany if the green light is given for him to complete a loan move to Liverpool.

Preston defender Ben Davies is also expected to sign for Liverpool before the deadline, pending a successful medical, as Jurgen Klopp looks to ease the club’s centre-back shortage.

Speaking about the possible deals Liverpool could be about to complete, Merson admits he was “shocked” when he found out the club were interested in the player.

“The lad at Schalke (Kabak), he honestly cannot believe his luck,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“If you were his agent, you’d look to be knighted. He’s gone to the champions, they’ve won one game all season, they’re struggling at the bottom of the league.

“I honestly don’t know (why Liverpool are buying him). I just don’t know, that shocked me, it really did.

“The lad at Preston (Ben Davies) is a decent player, a young player, but it’s a massive jump, you’re playing against the creme de la creme in the Premier League.”
