Paul McGrath's mum Betty brought 'joy and happiness' to the world, funeral hears

Paul McGrath's mother Betty brought "joy and happiness" to the world, her funeral service has heard.

Elizabeth Lowth, nee McGrath, passed away peacefully at St James' Hospital last Thursday and was laid to rest at a moving service in the capital this morning.

The Dubliner's funeral was held at Our Lady of Dolours Church on the southside of the city but only a limited group were allowed to attend in line with coronavirus guidelines.

However the service was also streamed online on the local parish website.

And Father Fergal MacDonagh led the tributes to the popular local, whose son Paul was capped 83 times for the Republic of Ireland.

He told mourners: "I asked Paul to paint a picture of his Mam with words, and he said she had a great sense of humour but she was also a great mother.

"I think that's the best mother any son or daughter can say of their Mam, to say they were a great mother."

Symbols of Betty's life brought up the altar including a pack of cards, an apron to symbolise her love of baking, a copy of her favourite weekly newspaper and a photo of Paul with Betty's late daughter Okune.

Fr MacDonagh went on to say how Betty brought "a bit of joy" to the world.

He continued: "Somebody late last night told me if she stopped you in the street, one of the things Betty would ask is 'Any jokes?'

"She'd love hearing a joke, and if it was something she hadn't heard before she would tell everyone else she had met that day.

"People who tell jokes want to bring a little humour, a little bit of lightness to what is sometimes a very difficult and awkward world.

"So we thank God For the times that Betty brought a bit of joy, a bit of happiness, a bit of lightness to the world we all live in."
