Paul McGinn subject of Hibs enquiry as St Mirren face transfer fight

Jim Goodwin admits he’s facing a fight to hang on to Paul McGinn with Hibs boss Jack Ross making his move for the full back.

The St Mirren boss confirmed the interest from Easter Road but he’s hoping to persuade the defender to stay put in Paisley.

Goodwin said: “We’ll see what happens. Jack Ross likes Paul and they need a right-back after Jason Naismith did his cruciate. There has been a bit of interest and we’ll see what happens.

“We don’t want to lose any players as our squad is very light.

“There’s been an enquiry and the ball is in Paul’s court. But we don’t want to lose anyone, especially someone as important as Paul has been to this club over the years. But we don’t want to keep a player that is unhappy. So we’ll see what comes of it.”

Goodwin was delighted his side managed to hold off Aberdeen to claim a priceless Premiership point yesterday – despite Jon Obika missing a glorious chance to grab all three.

He said: “We’re obviously pleased to get a point against a good Aberdeen team. We probably had the best opportunity of the game in the first half. We get a break of the ball after the Aberdeen boy makes as mistakes and Jon is through.

“It’s not a straightforward opportunity as he had two defenders breathing down his neck and he hits it with his weaker foot and it comes back off the post. He maybe could have taken it a bit closer to Joe Lewis.

“Overall I felt the game was quite scrappy. It wasn’t going to be pretty because Aberdeen don’t allow that. They’re very aggressive and physical with a lot of balls up to Sam Cosgrove. We knew we would have to compete with them and I thought my two centre backs were outstanding against him.

“That’s as quiet a game that Cosgrove has had for a long time. I’ve got to be pleased with the clean sheet and how we stood up the physicality of Aberdeen.”
