Paul McCartney says he mentally collaborates with John Lennon when writing songs

Sir Paul McCartney says he still “often” mentally collaborates with John Lennon while composing music.

The Beatles stars wrote more than 180 songs together and Sir Paul says he still hears his pal offering advice while he writes his solo material.

“We collaborated for so long, I think ‘Okay, what would he think of this? What would be say now?’” says Sir Paul, 78

“We’d both agree that this new song I’m taking about is going nowhere. So instead of sitting around, we’d destroy it and remake it.

“I’m working on one at the moment that was going one way but I didn’t like the lyric.

"This would have been the point where John and I would have said ‘You know what, let’s have a cup of tea and try and rethink this’.”

The stars met in 1957, and their songwriting partnership was one of the most successful ever, producing more than 600 million worldwide sales. John was killed in 1980.

Speaking to Uncut magazine, Sir Paul says he has no plans to retire though he does enjoy spending his days off horse riding.

“I’m very lucky,” he says. “I can go out on my old gee-gee and lose myself.”

“I love nature, I always have done. It’s so calming and inspirational.”
