Much of the Beatles’ sound and success is owed to George Martin, their arranger, technical expert and all round musical mentor. Paul McCartney naturally enlisted the producer for many of his solo albums, and in this vintage interview, both McCartney and Martin discuss their enduring musical relationship and creative rapport.

“I keep saying he’s like an old shoe,” says the Beatle at one point. “I like them, I put them on there’s no problem, it doesn’t hurt a bit. Plus he’s a very good producer. He’s one of the best in the world.”

You can hear McCartney reflecting on their friendship - with a little bit of footage shot during the Keep Me By My Side sessions - in the video below.

  • Deluxe editions of the albums Tug of War and Pipes of Peace are out now.
