Paul Lambert's Ipswich must 'step it up' ahead of Sunderland clash

Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert says his side must "step it up" when they take on Sunderland this evening.

Both clubs have made an impressive start to the season but the Tractor Boys sit four points above the hosts in second place.

Sunderland got back on track with a 2-0 win over Gillingham at the weekend after disappointing results against Portsmouth and Rochdale.

Phil Parkinson will be hoping his side send out an early message to their promotion rivals with a good result tonight.

In the opposition dugout, Lambert has warned his players that the name and size of a club means nothing and that they will need to up the levels of performance from their game against Crewe Alexandra.

The Blues picked up all three points at Portman Road thanks to a header from Oli Hawkins, despite Lambert saying his side rode their luck at times.

"We're expecting a difficult game but we will be doing everything we can to try and win it," Lambert told iFollow Ipswich.

"Every game is a test and the name and size of the club makes no difference to us.

"You can be as big a team as you want but you still have to get the job done out there on the grass.

"The main thing we're thinking is that we want to step it up from Saturday.

"We're expecting a difficult test but we will be doing everything we can to try and win the game."
