Paul Lambert praises Celtic Ange Postecoglou impact as he admits biggest regret ahead of Seville return

Paul Lambert believes Ange Postecoglou has reinvigorated Celtic since his arrival as manager this summer.

After enduring a difficult start and a Champions League exit, the 56-year-old has implemented an attractive style of play to the approval of the Parkhead faithful.

Celtic ensured a miserable season last term as they failed to win a trophy as their recent dominance of Scottish football ended in style.

Hoops legend Lambert has been impressed with Postecoglou’s impact and he expects Celtic to win trophies in the near future.

He said: “I think he’s been a breath of fresh air with the way he’s gone about things.

“Before last season this club had nine years of winning pretty much everything.

“There’s been that transitional period when last year things didn’t go their way. But they’ll come back again and if they start winning trophies he’ll love it here.”

Celtic return to the scene of one of their most famous nights in the club’s history in Seville, when they face Real Betis on Thursday night.

Over 80,000 supporters invaded the idyllic Spanish City in 2003 when Celtic faced Porto in the UEFA Cup final.

Martin O’Neill’s men suffered a painful extra-time defeat to Jose Mourinho’s wily side and Lambert, who captained Celtic that evening, admits it still hurts.

He added: “That’s the biggest regret the players from our era had – that we never won it there.

“Does seeing the team go back there this week bring back memories for me? Yeah, bad ones!

“We were so close to doing it. I still say that stadium wasn’t big enough to hold the crowd that we took.

“I don’t think the pitch was good enough for a European final either.

“We ran them so close, a really good Porto team who went on to win the Champions League a year later.

“I think it all hinged on a bit of luck, really.”
