Paul Lambert insists Celtic will have a back-up plan following Eddie Howe bombshell

Former Celtic captain Paul Lambert insists his old side will have a back-up plan in place following the shock news regarding Eddie Howe earlier today.

Howe had been the red-hot favourite to takeover as the Hoops' new manager following Neil Lennon's resignation in February but the Englishman revealed this evening that he will NOT become the next Parkhead boss.

The Celtic hierarchy have issued a statement in the wake of the news, and are reportedly already in talks with another candidate, who remains unnamed.

And Lambert reckons supporters should remain calm and keep the faith, despite pre-season training starting in just three weeks time.

He told Sky Sports News: I think with any football club they will have a back-up plan, and that is what Celtic are going to do.

"I think it’s too big a club to think they can rest (everything) on one guy coming in. I think they will have a number of guys to go and get in whether Eddie was the first option or not.

"If he’s decided not to come, you move on.

"The club is bigger than anybody. Whoever gets the job is going to be walking into a great club."

Having been sacked by Ipswich Town earlier this year, Lambert himself could be a candidate to replace his former team-mate Lennon, although that looks to be unlikely at this point.
