Paul Lambert hammers SFA and SPFL as former Celtic hero delivers 'not up to the job' verdict

Paul Lambert fears for Scottish football.

The former Scotland skipper claims the men running our game have shown they are not up to it with their handling of the coronavirus crisis.

Lambo took aim at the SFA, the SPFL and the SPFA for poor leadership as he blasted: “The reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed people who aren’t up to the job.”

The former Celtic star blasted the SPFL’s voting process to call last season early and he was taken aback when they decided to carry on with a group stage in the BetFred Cup.

The Ipswich boss said: “Who came up with that idea? It’s ludicrous. Having a group stage when they couldn’t even finish the leagues or the Scottish Cup is absolute nonsense.

“There’s more chance of an upset when you have one-off games and that adds excitement.

“It would also free up dates for re-arranged
fixtures because, in case they hadn’t noticed, Scotland doesn’t always have the best of weather in the winter.

“To choose to have the extra matches of a group in the middle of this global crisis is just ludicrous. I can not understand that at all.”

Lambert hammered the SFA for not pulling out of last month’s 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in Prague amid positive tests among the home squad and chief executive Ian Maxwell and president Rod Petrie for not travelling to the game.

He also questioned the players’ union role.

He said: “This is a killer disease and our players have parents, partners and kids who need to be protected from it and there’s more risk of infection from playing these games.

“I also can’t understand why the PFA have said
nothing while Motherwell travelled to a Covid hot spot in Israel and Aberdeen played Sporting Lisbon, whose manager and several players had tested positive.”
