Paul Ince fired ‘Dagenham’ pep talk at Nottingham Forest man before last-gasp winner

Paul Ince went to unusual lengths to get more out of Nottingham Forest’s Tyrese Fornah, but it worked a treat as the midfielder headed a dramatic late winner for Reading.

The Royals trailed 1-0 at home to Rotherham United in Tuesday’s Championship clash, prompting manager Ince to make a double change at half-time. One of those changes saw Fornah, on a season-long loan from Forest, brought on. However, Ince wasn’t initially happy with the 23-year-old's impact as he looked for his side to win the midfield battle.

As result, the former Manchester United, Liverpool and Inter Milan midfielder delivered a mid-game pep talk to Fornah which bizarrely referenced his upbringing in east London.

“It's great the subs came on and made an impact because subs have to do that,” said Ince, reported GetReading, who also hails from east London.

“Sometimes you bring them on and they don't make an impact but I am pleased for them because they train hard, don't moan when they don't come on, there are no egos. So it's pleasing, especially for Fornah, who I had to pull over.

“He missed out on a tackle and I said ‘you're meant to be from Dagenham - you need to show some Dagenham stuff out there because at the moment you're losing tackles’ - and then he won the next one and then scored a header so he’s happy.”

Andy Carroll drew Reading level early in the second half and the former Newcastle forward played a part in the winner, nodding a corner down for Fornah to head home only his second ever senior goal.

Speaking after the match, Fornah admitted: “It was quite an emotional moment, scoring that late winner. I think I shed a tear.

“I’m just really glad to get the winner for this club. Just to be out there scoring goals in the Championship, that’s what I dreamt of as a kid. It’s a dream come true to be scoring goals as a midfielder.”
