Paul Hyland Jnr reacts to controversial loss to Maxi Hughes

Paul Hyland Jnr has given his reaction to Friday night's controversial defeat to Maxi Hughes.

The Belfast lightweight lost out in his British title bid in Bolton after being stopped in the eighth round.

The controversy surrounded the finish.

Hyland almost touched down after sustaining a body shot, with referee Mark Lyson initially pointing Hughes to a neutral corner.

Lyson then waved the fight back on, but Hyland was already walking away to the other corner when he was caught with a clubbing right hand from Hughes.

Hyland went down but returned to his feet with the count at nine, but Lyson waved the contest off.

Hughes' final punch was legal, but the confusion surrounding the final moments led to Hyland's corner voicing their anger at the end.

Reflecting on the fight on his Facebook page, Hyland said: "Boxing is a tough oul game lol. Gutted about the decision and the way it ended but that’s boxing.

"Both us were cutting the ribs off each other, it was still close enough and anything can happen in the later rounds.

"The ref did say stop boxing and I was catching my breath from the body shot and also caught one on the head I didn’t see coming, it is what it is.

"Thanks a lot to everyone for the support, it’s unreal, much appreciated and thanks to all my coaches, manager and all my sponsors who always help me out during camps.

"Take a rest a go again."

Reflecting on his victory, Hughes said: "Some people might call it luck, but I call it years of hard work paying off. I took my opportunity when it came and now look at this.

"For anybody out there, keep being true to your dreams. I had a goal to win the British title, and now I want to keep on achieving. I knew I could get the wins on the big stage, and this means the world to me."
