Paul Hollywood piled on almost a stone during GBBO filming after shifting lockdown weight

Eating cake for a living has its drawbacks.

Paul Hollywood, 55, piled on almost a stone while filming the new series of the Great British Bake Off. And he is particularly irked because he had only just shed plenty of weight.

“I put on 12 bloody pounds in that tent,” he grumbles. “Before I started, I lost a stone-and-a half. I was cycling and running, and getting quite fit.”

By comparison fellow judge Prue Leith, 81, only gained a pound in weight nibbling on the bakers’ treats.

“I could go to the loo and drop more than that,” scoffs Paul, charmingly, to Best magazine.

The pair say the standards this year were high, so the tasty treats served up were even more delicious than normal.

“For one of my technical bakes we were faced with 12 not identical, but damn near perfect bakes,” says Prue.

Paul gained weight during the first lockdown, so started watching what he was eating.

He quit alcohol earlier this year and his 1,100 calories-a-day diet included eggs, soup and, naturally, bread.

And we can all watch what he eats to put it all back on when the series returns to Channel 4 on September 21.
