Paul Heckingbottom brands Hibs 'soft and weak' and warns struggling side to toughen up

Paul Heckingbottom slammed "weak" and "soft" Hibs and warned his struggling side to toughen up.

Motherwell ran the Easter Road outfit ragged at Fir Park on Saturday, easily sweeping them aside to secure a 3-0 victory.

Hibs have now conceded 11 goals in just four Premiership outings and also shipped three to Morton in the Betfred Cup last 16.

Heckingbottom believes his players are struggling with the rough and tumble of the top flight as he offered no excuses for a dismal afternoon in Lanarkshire.

"It's plain for all to see if you're watching the game, we look a pretty side but soft," he told BBC Sportsound.

"The game will never change, it doesn't matter how much preparation you do, how well you pass the ball, if you're poor in one v one situations you're going to get beat.

"That's been our trend, our theme really.

"Even in games we've played well and won I've still not been happy with one v one situations, whether that's in set plays, attacking or defending.

"That's the thing that we have to put right or we'll not be as successful as we want to be.

"It's about toughening up. How do you dominate an opponent? You run harder than him.

"You're stronger than him. You're tactically better than him, you might be technically better than him - whatever it is you have to be better."

Despite laying into his players, the Hibs boss had no issue with the travelling support - despite chants of "Hecky get to f**k" ringing out from the away end.

Heckingbottom last week accused the fans of making his side anxious in another disappointing result away at St Johnstone.

But this time he insisted: "I thought they were fantastic.

"I could hear them throughout the game, and they probably believed like I did when it was still 1-0 and we were pushing and pushing."
