Paul Hartley sacked as former Celtic and Hearts star departs Hartlepool United

Former Celtic and Hearts star Paul Hartley has been sacked by Hartlepool United.

He made the move to England's League Two after deciding to leave Cove Rangers. He enjoyed a successful time at the ambitious club leading them to the Scottish Championship before deciding to part ways for a new challenge.

However, after just nine league games the former Scotland international has been axed alongside assistant manager Gordon Young. The ex-Celtic midfielder didn't taste success in any of his league outings drawing four and losing five. That left them sitting 23rd out of 24 in England's fourth tier. The drop from that divison leads to falling out of the football league.

The club explained the reasons behind their decision in a short statement. It reads: "Hartlepool United can today confirm that they have parted company with Manager Paul Hartley and Assistant Manager Gordon Young.

"A decision was taken to make a change with the club currently sitting second from bottom in League Two and without a league win so far this season.

"A further update on succession plans will follow in due course."

The 45-year-old will now be on the hunt for a new job after managing at Alloa, Dundee, Falkirk and Cove before his stint south of the border.

He took the likes of former Rangers and Motherwell winger James Hastie to England as part of his major summer overhaul of the squad he inherited.
