Paul Gascoigne tackled by Waitrose guard after 'taking bottle of wine without paying'

Football legend Paul Gascoigne walks away from a shop as he is tackled by staff over an unpaid bottle of red wine.

Gazza, 52, left a Little Waitrose store at London’s King’s Cross Station with the plonk and was followed by a security guard and a manager.

The ex-England star, who has battled alcoholism and drug issues, said he was sorry – then went back inside.

It was just after midday. A witness told the Sunday Mirror: “I walked into the shop then saw Gazza outside.

“He walked in behind another man who picked a bottle of red wine up from a shelf and headed towards the checkouts.

“But while he was queueing, Gazza took the bottle of wine out of his hand and walked out of the shop without paying.

“It’s only a very small store so the security guard had seen everything.

“He followed him straight out and said to him, ‘You can’t do that’. That’s when I started taking pictures.

“It was agreed that as Gazza had apologised, that if he came back into the store and paid for the bottle he’d be let off.

“After a discussion he went back in and paid for the bottle in cash. It was about £9.”

The incident came barely two months after Gazza, whose clubs included Newcastle , Tottenham and Rangers, was cleared of sex assault after kissing a woman on a train.

He also posed for selfies in return for free booze on a recent night out in Glasgow.

There were other worrying episodes in August, September and October – including a clash with audience members during an event with former England footballer Peter Beardsley, 58.

A Waitrose & Partners spokesman said: “We respect the privacy of our customers and we have no information to provide.”

Gazza’s team was asked for comment but did not respond.
