Paul Gascoigne identifies young player who can be England's creative spark

Tottenham and Newcastle hero Paul Gascoigne believes Leicester's James Maddison is the player who can take England forward and follow in his creative footsteps.

'Gazza' also criticised the standard of coaching in the country, believing many of the players being brought through are like 'robots' who cannot express their abilities.

Maddison has been tipped by many for a call-up to the senior side by Gareth Southgate following an impressive breakthrough season in 2018-2019 and an equally encouraging start to the current campaign.

And Gascoigne, now 52, thinks it is only a matter of time before the 22-year-old wins his first cap.

Speaking in Glasgow as Premier Sport launched their coverage of Serie A, Gascoigne said: "I don't know what these coaches are doing to our young players coming through, I really don't, because we don't have many players like Maddison coming through.

"He wants to be on the ball, he is creative, he takes people on. I've seen him do that often for Leicester , when I've been watching games.

"There are too many robots, definitely, because there is so much pressure on players and managers not to lose the game – they're frightened to lose.

"I always say keep trying things and, eventually, it will work out. But they're afraid to try."

Gascoigne praised Southgate for his impact of the team since taking charge on England in 2016, but believes the side still lack somebody to take charge of matches in the centre of the park.

"Gareth Southgate has done a great job, got them playing great football," he added.

"They just miss that something creative in the middle, the willingness to have a go at someone. Just have a go."

Gascoigne made 57 appearances for England from 1988-1998 and is remembered as arguably the most talented player of his generation, helping the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals in Italy in 1990.
