Paul Gascoigne breaks down on Good Morning Britain discussing his battle with alcoholism

Paul Gascoigne broke down in tears on Good Morning Britain as he opened up about his battle with alcoholism.

The former NUFC and England star became emotional while talking about how the public has helped him through his darkest periods.

The 52-year-old's has long struggled with his addiction and revealed that in recent years, he has shelled out £20,000 on anti-alcohol pellets.

Speaking months after he was cleared of sexually assaulting a woman on a train, ending a turbulent few years for the star, he told the Mirror about his life-changing op in 2018.

He said: “I’ve been to Australia, and spent £20,000 including all the travel, to get an operation that stops me drinking.

“You get pellets in your stomach and it makes you feel sick if you have too much.

“It means you can have a beer or a glass of wine and socialise, but you cannot have any more."

Talking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid today, he said: "There's been long spells when I don't drink... being an alcoholic there's sometimes you just want to get smashed."

After admitting that he had a relapse at Christmas, he said: "I'm no angel but I'm an honest guy."

Gazza began to get emotional when he spoke about how the public had helped him through his toughest times.

"I accept some of the bad stuff I did," he said. "When I feel bad I go down to the high street."

He also said that he had "never turned down a selfie" because he loves the public and often sits down with the homeless.

"I take [just] a day at a time. I needed my ego smashed," he said. "The biggest thing I had to come through was ask for help."
