Paul Gascoigne breaks down on Good Morning Britain after being cleared of sexual assault charges

Paul Gascoigne broke down in tears today as he recounted his ‘year from hell’ which saw him accused of sexual assault.

The football legend appeared on Good Morning Britain to speak about his ordeal after being cleared of all charges in court following a trial.

Gazza opened up to hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway about his shock when, on a train earlier this year, a woman accused him of the offence after he kissed her.

Through tears, the 52-year-old tried to explain how much support from fans meant to him.

"It did get hard walking around the street and you’ve got people who are on your side saying... I think the more that people were on my side..." Gazza said before getting emotional.

He tried again: "I think I spent… sorry,” before choking up again.

Kate passed him some tissues before Gazza attempted to explain how his supporters had helped him through the dark time.

He continued: “I think I spent the whole year telling people I did nothing wrong."

Paul, who has a long standing alcohol addiction, also added that the ordeal was a test for his sobriety - he is currently six months sober.

On the train, Paul admitted kissing a woman, but his defence lawyer Michelle Heeley QC said in her closing speech that while the kiss was “misplaced", it was not sexual.

She said the kiss lasted two or three seconds, was on a packed train, and was not preceded by any "lecherous comment", touching or groping.

Paul was also cleared of a less serious alternative charge of assault by beating.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
