Paul Gascoigne appeared in court today where he denied sexually assaulting a woman on board a train.

The former footballer will next appear at Teesside Crown Court on 8 January.

The 51-year-old was arrested at Durham station on August 20 and last month British Transport Police (BTP) said he had been charged with one count of sexual assault by touching.

Gascoigne, who played for Newcastle United, Spurs, Lazio, Rangers and Everton, among other clubs, had previously protested his innocence on Twitter.

A BTP spokeswoman said in November: "Paul Gascoigne, of Amy Street, Leicester, was charged via postal requisition with one count of sexual assault by touching, contrary to Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

He appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
