Paul Flynn reveals how Michael Murphy helped him hone his trademark long-range scoring

Paul Flynn was known for his long-range kicking - but it was a skill he never honed until he was in university.

Flynn attended DCU and was part of a fabled Sigerson Cup winning partnership in 2012 with Donegal's Michael Murphy, who he also roomed with in college along with Cork man Aidan Walsh.

And it was the big Donegal man that helped Flynn hone his craft as they kicked around in Albert College Park.

"Playing club football I would have considered myself a good kicker," Flynn told Off The Ball

"When I was in DCU interestingly, I lived with Michael Murphy for four years. I really do feel that it was a turning point.

"We learned a lot from one another I'd say, but we used to go out and spend our spare time between lectures and stuff out kicking.

"He was one of the best ball-strikers from the minute he came onto the scene as a 17-year-old for Donegal."

Murphy and Dublin team-mate Bernard Brogan helped change the way Flynn viewed his shot taking.

"[Brogan and Murphy] didn't measure [kicking] on outcome or scores," Flynn recalled

"They'd measured it on how they struck the ball, and how they kicked it.

"Composure was a big thing for me. I might work at 100mph to get the ball, and then I wouldn't bring myself back to 85mph to get a good execution.

"So that was a big learning curve for me."
