Paul F Tompkins's favourite TV: Hannibal, The Colbert Report, Firefly

Unmissable show?

Hannibal. It's terrific. It's really well done. I look forward to it every week. Brian Fuller [the show's creator] has such an imaginative way of killing people, which he also did on Pushing Daisies, in this sort of whimsical way which was also quite grisly. Let's hope he never turns his powers to evil! The thing that makes me laugh out loud more than anything is The Colbert Report. I think that show is the funniest show on television, every night that it's on.

Box set?

I really love Gavin & Stacey. Funny, charming, genuinely emotional and real. They did an amazing job. They're remaking it over here; I'm really sceptical.

Bring back ...

Firefly, the Joss Whedon sci-fi, which easily could have remained great for a few more seasons. It's a really fun show and very imaginative. Maybe a few years ahead of its time as well, considering the success of Battlestar Galactica. Joss Whedon has added clout now so he could probably make it.

Come Dine With Me lineup?

Our current president. He seems like a decent person. I'd love to talk to him about the drone strikes and the NSA stuff and how he squares that with being a good person. Bob Newhart. I think his comedy holds up really well. A lot of people say Jesus, but I'd pass that up in favour of Mary Magdalene. I'd ask her what was really going on in her relationship with Christ; hope she dishes the dirt. Not that I've tried to find out details of Christ's sex life. And my wife. You need someone to help you make your excuses if it's boring!

Pitch us a TV show

Something that I'd love to do is a traditional variety show. An hour-long show with comedy, music, people who can do strange stuff. Oh, and a group of kids singing a little raggedly. Any time a bunch of little kids are trying their hardest to do a thing, it's always hilarious.
