Paul Dummett turns down chance to play for Wales to focus on Newcastle United

Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett has told Ryan Giggs he is concentrating on club football after his name was omitted from the latest Wales squad.

Dummett will not be in the squad to face either Azerbaijan or Belarus next month and Giggs has been asked about the situation.

The Geordie defender was injured last year playing against Denmark when he pulled his hamstring.

After starting the last two United games his international future is suddenly being questioned by the media in Wales.

Giggs said: "I spoke to Paul and he really wanted to concentrate on club football. I think that will be it.

"He felt that he's had a lot of hamstring problems so he just felt he wanted to make sure he was fit for Newcastle.

"That was it really.

"I've got centre-halves who are playing, and I was considering him for that centre-half position, but it's not a problem.

"Obviously he's playing in the Premier League and he's a good defender, but I've got options so it's not a problem."
