Paul Dummett says Newcastle are ready to have a 'massive say' in the Premier League title race

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett believes the Magpies are ready to have a 'massive say' in the Premier League title race.

The Magpies welcome Liverpool to St James' Park in their final home game of the season on Saturday evening and could put a serious dent in the Reds' title ambitions.

Victory over Liverpool, who currently trail Manchester City by one point at the top of the Premier League, will hand City the chance to seal a second successive Premier League crown at home against Leicester on Monday evening.

And although Newcastle have little pressure on them with Premier League safety assured, Dummett insists there will be no lack of motivation come Saturday evening.

"We could have a massive say in what happens," Dummett told ChronicleLive.

"We want to do the best we can, the same as (at Brighton). Cardiff will have been wanting us to win. We tried our best.

Paul Dummett identifies the moment that could have transformed Newcastle's season at an early stage

"We're professionals, and we want to do well for ourselves. We'll be preparing this week and hopefully get the three points."

Newcastle have proven they are capable of beating the league's top sides this season.

January's 2-1 win over Manchester City remains City's only league defeat of 2019 and proved to be a catalyst for Newcastle pulling clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

"Not many teams have beaten them this season, so it's credit to the players that beat them," Dummett added.

"It was a little bit of a turning point in our season, and we picked up some results after that and went on a bit of a run with the home results we got. It's going to be a difficult game as Liverpool have only lost one game this season. It's going to be difficult, for sure, so we'll have to be at our best to beat them."

Newcastle head into the clash on the back of a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Dummett played a hand in Newcastle's goal at the AMEX stadium as his cross was met by Salomon Rondon who teed up Ayoze Perez for his 12th goal of the campaign.

However, after an impressive first half showing, Dummett was left disappointed by the way Newcastle let three points slip from their grasp.

"I think it was pretty disappointing after our first-half performance and the possession we had.

"We didn't manage to get the second goal. I think it was probably a bit worrying for them second-half after the way we played, and they came out and changed the formation and style of play.

"It resulted in them playing long balls quite a bit. It was a game of two halves. It's another point, but disappointing we couldn't get all three.

"We've been in the position Brighton were in before, and it's never nice playing with the pressure. A point might be enough for them to stay in the league now.

"They might be happy with that. It's a much better feeling playing with freedom, and the first half showed that. We kept the ball really well.

"I don't normally do that (his cross for the goal) very often, so it was nice to be involved in the goal. It was a good finish. We're disappointed not to get three points, and we've got two more games now."
