Paul Dummett reveals what he really thinks of the Chronicle's player ratings system

Paul Dummett has been asked his opinion on the Chronicle's player rating system after earning the nickname "Dummett 7" at St James' Park.

The Geordie defender's average has actually nudged over and below 7/10 in his 10-year first-team career on Tyneside, but the Chron's merit marks are often widely discussed on social media.

Dummett made his return to first-team action for Newcastle against Southampton yesterday and actually scored 9/10 after making seven clearances to help his side cling on to a 3-2 win.

But it was two years ago that coach Ben Dawson - now with the first-team - said that staff behind the scenes had no issue using the 7/10 rating as a template for the club's next generation.

Dawson told the Chronicle back then: "It is a difficult situation for us as coach. We're trying to teach them the importance of results.

"But ultimately we need to get these lads to 7 out of 10 every week.

"Paul Dummett is a great example of that from a professional coaching point of view.

Newcastle United 3-2 Southampton - Lee Ryder reacts to Twitter Qs and 'outrageous' Joelinton merit mark

"He gets a 7/10 and the jumps up to 8/10 or 9/10.

"He never falls below that consistent level of 7/10.

"Sometimes we have players in the reserves at 8/10 or 9/10 but then slip to 4/10 or 5/10.

"So we are trying to raise the standards.

"We want a level of consistency from this group."

Dummett's return to action coincided with an interview in the club's programme for the Saints clash.

Dummett said: "Everyone says I'm always a 7/10 every week. Someone said to me: 'It's like Ronseal - does what it says on the tin!'

"It doesn't bother me as such.

"There's players in the team that take more credit than me, but I know they do a lot more and I just do the simple boring stuff."

When asked what he really thinks of his consistent 7/10 scores, he said: "It definitely doesn't annoy me.

"It's a good thing.

"Managers like players they can rely on and are consistent when they play.

"That's a benefit I think I've got.

"Managers know when I play what I am going to give."
