Paul Dickov says Man City 'far ahead' of PSG despite Champions League loss

Paul Dickov believes Manchester City are "far ahead" of Paris Saint-Germain despite the recent Champions League result between the two sides.

Goals from Idrissa Gueye and Lionel Messi were enough to secure PSG the victory on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes, giving the French outfit some measure of revenge for last season's loss to City in the semi-finals.

While City were unable to find the back of the net on the night, they did carve out a number of opportunities and will consider themselves unfortunate to take a point at least back to Manchester.

In the first half in particular, both Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva hit the woodwork when they should have scored.

After winning their first group game 6-3 against RB Leipzig, City remain in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages, where they will be looking to go one better after finishing runners-up to Chelsea last season.

Dickov said that despite the result, City can take heart from the fact they were superior to their hosts in a number of departments.

"Anyone who knows anything about football will look at that game and see how far ahead we are of PSG," the former striker told City's official podcast. "Because we were tonight, in every department."

"You do look stupid because we are biased. We've lost the game 2-0 but as I keep going back to - the performance. To go to Paris after a tough, tough game against Chelsea and put in that performance and dominate PSG the way we did. It's early doors but it looks so good for the future and for this season."

On the night, City had 18 shots and seven on target compared to PSG's six and three respectively. The Premier League side also had control of the ball for long periods, boasting 55 per cent of possession at full time.

Dickov said that he would expect manager Pep Guardiola to be pleased with a number of aspects of the display as a result.

"I think performance-wise it was fantastic," said Dickov. "PSG are one of the favourites yet again in the Champions League and we dominated them. You look at our possession, the shots we've had, corners you name it.

"But when you've got Lionel Messi in your team. And I can't remember him doing anything at all tonight up until the goal tonight. A fantastic finish, you're 2-0 down and then it's game over.

"But I think Pep will look at the performance and be really, really pleased with that. We're all disappointed we've been beat, but performance-wise there was big performances from big players again tonight."
