Paul Cook makes a surprising admission after watching Leeds United outplay Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook admitted Leeds United were full value for their 2-0 victory against his side on Saturday.

Goals either side of half time from Patrick Bamford ensured the Whites left the DW Stadium with all three points.

United played against 10 men for over 70 minutes after Joe Williams was sent off for two yellow cards.

That dismissal could have brought back unhappy memories for the Whites' players and fans, but Bamford's brace ensured there was no repeat result of that freak scoreline in April.

After the game, Cook graciously admitted Marcelo Bielsa's side were full value for their victory.

The Latics boss did, however, air his gripe about the inconsistency of referee Andrew Madley's decisions, after he chose not to book Kalvin Phillips for a very similar tackle to Joe Williams's first challenge, which saw the Wigan player receive his first yellow card.

Speaking to the press after the match, Cook said: "It's always going to be a tough ask when you're playing Leeds. They ask so many questions of you. Big decisions will always influence the outcome of the game.

"Are we aggrieved with the sending off? No. It's a second yellow or a red card, without a doubt. Are we aggrieved with the decision just before that when Phillips makes a very similar challenge and gets no yellow card? Yes.

"All we're asking for, as manager, is consistency in the game. That's all we're asking for, just be consistent. We didn't have that today.

"Has the referee cost us the game? That's a bit of a debate because Joe's is a red card. Leeds are an excellent side to play against. To play against Leeds with 10 men is very, very tough.

"They ask so many questions of you and they're going to have a very, very strong season. They're an excellent team. There are no problems in that.

"Going forward, we just want that consistency with the referees. Williams's first yellow and Phillips's first tackle in the game, for me, are just both yellow cards.

"Unfortunately, when they don't get those consistencies right, it will result in a red card for someone and managers feeling aggrieved, not at the result, but at the consistency of the referee's decision."
