Pattaya United dashed Bangkok United's dream of a winning return to Thai League 1 action by inflicting a shock 1-0 defeat on their fancied rivals last night.
The top flight of national football resumed yesterday after a four-week break to allow the senior national team and the SEA Games squad to prepare and take part in their respective international assignments.
The match was heading for a goalless draw before defender Surachet Ngamtip claimed the last-gasp winner off a spot-kick for the hosts Pattaya United.
The upshot also brought Bangkok United's eight-match winning streak to a grinding halt.
The other capital side Bangkok Glass also failed to record the result they had been hoping for.
A second-half strike by Tiago Oliveira Souza helped Ubon UMT United salvage a 1-1 draw and deny Bangkok Glass a victory.
Chitpanya Tisud struck shortly before the half-time whistle to give Bangkok Glass the lead, but Ubon UMT hit back and Tiago netted the leveller in the 58th minute.
Meanwhile, a brace by Paulo Rangel had given Nakhon Ratchasima hopes for a win but Nicolas Velez fired home his second goal of the match late to earn visitors Suphanburi a 2-2 draw.
Suphanburi went ahead in the 37th minute when Nicolas Velez found the net, but it took the hosts only five minutes to draw level with Paulo Rangel delivering the equaliser.
Rangel gave the hosts the upper hand by converting a 78th-minute penalty only to see Velez steal the tie with a spectacular goal four minutes later.
The month-long break brought along little change in Super Power's fortunes as the bottom-placed side suffered their 25th defeat in 26 matches this season, losing 3-1 to Si Sa Ket at home last night.
The victory however failed to drag Si Sa Ket, who scored through Suriyakarn Chimjeen, Kittipong Wongma and Yai Nilwong, out of the relegation zone. Ekaphan Intasen netted the only goal for Super Power.
