Patryk Klimala claims post Celtic career landmark as flop striker makes Major League Soccer history

Former Celtic flop Patryk Klimala has written his name in the Major League Soccer history books for the New York Red Bulls.

The 22-year-old struggled to make the grade at Celtic Park after making a £3.5m move from Jagiellonia Białystok in January 2020.

He did turn heads with his work ethic during limited opportunities but could never convince he was the long-term answer for the former Premiership champions.

That saw him shipped out to the MLS with New York Red Bulls offering a career lifeline to the Polish striker.

Since the switch he has netted seven goals in the American top flight, but none was more important than the dramatic equaliser against rivals New York City.

City, managed by former Parkhead boss Ronny Deila, led on derby day going into the final seconds of the game.

However, with the margin just 1-0, Klimala netted a 102nd-minute leveller from the spot, the latest ever in an MLS regular season match.

It came following a lengthy Video Review, that Maxime Chanot handled a Klimala shot in the box.

Former Celtic gaffer Deila fumed after the clash stating: “It hits his shoulder, it's his upper arm. If it’s hitting his hand low we can discuss it.

“It’s half a yard from the ball. It’s not a goal chance. It’s just a shot from 16 or 17 yards, I don’t know, on a second ball.

"No players react, no players react. Everybody is calm, the New York Red Bulls players are calm, nobody reacts. If that was a clear handball, then we will see 10 crazy Red Bull players.”
