Patriots signing undrafted rookie dual-threat QB Malik Cunningham

The New England Patriots are adding a fourth player to their quarterback room after the reported signing of Louisville’s Malik Cunningham.

With the 2023 NFL draft in the books, the Patriots are now turning their attention to the undrafted rookies. Cunningham is an interesting choice right off the bat given his skill set.

He’s a dual-threat option as a signal-caller with his legs arguably being one of his most dangerous weapons. In 2021, he rushed for 1,031 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Cardinals, along with throwing for 2,941 yards, 19 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

His numbers took a noticeable dip in the 2022 season, but that didn’t stop the Patriots from pouncing early. At a time when the league seems to be shifting towards more mobile quarterbacks, the Patriots finally have a young guy in their system they can potentially mold into something.

As of right now, the starting quarterback job is Mac Jones’ to lose, and Bailey Zappe appears to be the clear No. 2 option. The Patriots also have veteran Trace McSorley on the roster.

But Cunningham is without question an intriguing addition, even if he’s sure to have his work cut out in making the team.
