Patriots get roster exemption for Ben Watson in return from suspension

The New England Patriots will get a roster exemption for tight end Ben Watson, coach Bill Belichick said on WEEI on Monday. That means the Patriots can carry an extra player on their 53-man roster into the weekend when they can elect to activate Watson.

“We’ll just have to see how it goes,” Belichick said when asked about Watson’s return on “Ordway Merloni and Fauria.” “Right now, we have a roster exemption for him, so we’ll just evaluate it. We haven’t been on the field yet, so we will evaluate it and see how it goes.”

That’s good news for players like quarterback Cody Kessler, offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch and perhaps even the tight ends on the roster, whose spots may be in jeopardy after the return of Watson.
