Patriots coach Bill Belichick gives positive Ty Montgomery update

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had an update on running back Ty Montgomery on Monday.

The veteran suffered an ankle injury in Friday’s preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders. It was an unfortunate end to a successful preseason for Montgomery, one that saw him emerge as a potential weapon out of the backfield. He had five carries for 17 yards and one catch for five yards.

Montgomery was one of the Patriots’ offseason acquisitions and could be used in a sizable role if healthy. Belichick gave a positive prognosis to the Greg Hill Show, as transcribed by Zack Cox of NESN.com.

“We haven’t practiced since we’ve been back here, so we’ll see how things go today, see what he’s able to do,” Belichick said. “But I think he’s doing alright.”

New England will need all hands on deck in order to correct an offensive unit that struggled during Friday’s game.

They focused on running back depth in this year’s draft, adding Pierre Strong Jr. and Kevin Harris. Having a healthy Montgomery would give the Patriots additional depth in a crowded backfield.
