Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore test positive for COVID-19

Patriots cornerback and defending Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore, has tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Gilmore’s positive test comes just days after the Patriots had to play in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs without their starting quarterback in Cam Newton due to a positive coronavirus test. Kansas City won the game, 26-10, and in Week 5, the Patriots are scheduled to host the Denver Broncos at 4:25 p.m.

Newton’s test put the Pats’ meeting with the Chiefs in serious doubt, but that contest was moved back to Monday and New England waited until the day of the game to travel to Kansas City for the matchup in order to get the game in. As of Monday, Newton was asymptomatic for coronavirus and the soonest he could reportedly return to Patriots facilities would have been Thursday. In addition to Newton, practice squad defensive tackle Bill Murray was placed on the reserve/ COVID-19 list.

ESPN reports that the Patriots have team facilities are currently shutdown following the news of Gilmore’s positive test for the virus, leaving Sunday’s meeting with the Broncos in question.
