Patriots announce 2019 team captains, including first-timer Elandon Roberts

Just a week ago, some thought Patriots linebacker Elandon Roberts’ future in New England was uncertain. Now, Roberts is a team captain, along with six of his teammates, the Patriots announced Thursday afternoon.

Roberts is joined by center David Andrews, quarterback Tom Brady, safety Devin McCourty, linebacker Donta Hightower, receiver Matthew Slater and running back James White as captains for the 2019 season.

Although Roberts was speculated to be cut before New England set its 53-man roster last weekend, his Patriots teammates believe that he is an important member of the roster, on and off the field, earning Roberts captaincy for the first time.

New England’s sixth-round pick in the 2016 draft, Roberts appeared in all 16 games last season, starting in 11 of them. Roberts is expected to be a depth option among a deep, talented linebacker unit.

Andrews, who was placed on the injured reserve list due to blood clots, was selected as team captain for his third time. Although the Patriots starting center for the past three season won’t be suiting up at all during the 2019 season, Andrews has made his presence felt in New England’s locker room and will provide guidance for Russell Bodine and Ted Karras, who look to fill his void.
