Patriots add TE Jakob Johnson from German football league

The New England Patriots are adding tight end and fullback Jakob Johnson, according to NFL Germany Media.

Johnson played most recently for the German Football League’s Stuttgart Scorpions, and is joining the Patriots as a part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, which stared in 2017 to give international athletes the opportunity to improve their skills and earn a spot on an NFL roster.

Whether Johnson is capable of winning an NFL job remains to be seen. He’ll join a shallow tight end group, which features Matt LaCosse, Jacob Hollister and Stephen Anderson.

Johnson managed more tackles (22) than he did receptions (three) during his four years in Tennessee in college. With the Scorpions, he had 43 receptions for 474 yards and four touchdowns during the 2018 season. He also logged 12 tackles. He has experience playing on offense, defense and special teams.
