Patrick Roberts in transfer agitation as Celtic hero steps up his search for new club

Former Celtic winger Patrick Roberts is weighing up whether to scrap his Middlesbrough loan spell.

The 23-year-old has only made three starts since joining Boro on a season-long agreement from Manchester City as his second spell on the Riverside hasn't wokred.

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock wants Roberts to stay but will understand if he chooses to leave for more regular match action elsewhere.

Roberts has led a nomadic existence since his two-and-a-half year stay with Celtic ended in 2018 with short stays as Norwich, Girona and with Boro.

Warnock, who has only used Roberts for 39 minutes in the last seven games, said: “I’ve had a chat with Patrick, he’s aware of the situation. The lad wants to play.

“I don’t want him to leave but if he thinks he can improve his chances by going I wouldn’t stand in his way.”

A return to Parkhead appears unlikely but Roberts is still held in high esteem in Glasgow for his telling contribution north of the border under Brendan Rodgers' stewardship.

Roberts' current deal with Manchester City expires in the summer of 2022 but it appears increasingly likely that he will seek a permanent solution before then.
