Patrick Peterson compares Byron Murphy to Tyrann Mathieu

Arizona Cardinals rookie cornerback Byron Murphy is slated to play a critical role for the team when the regular season begins. He is likely going to start at cornerback or at least be one of the top three while veteran Patrick Peterson serves his six-game suspension for PED use.

So there are high hopes for Murphy.

Peterson compared him to one of the more popular and impactful players the Cardinals have had in a few years — defensive back Tyrann Mathieu.

It is because of Murphy’s position flexibility.

“They’ve got him playing all over the place,” Peterson told reporters of Murphy, noting the rookie is making the adjustment of playing more than one spot. “He’s not really sold on one position yet, but he can play it all. (He is) a great asset for us because he is very interchangeable. He reminds me a lot of Tyrann, but able to play corner instead of safety.”

Murphy is practicing at outside cornerback and in the slot. Mathieu played safety and in the slot as well.

“Byron is definitely coming along,” Peterson said. “Very steady right now.”

Murphy had an interception of Brett Hundley in Saturday’s practice. He continues to make progress and, if he can be solid from Week 1, the defense will be in good shape.

“The sky’s the limit.”
