Patrick McEleney excited by Dundalk's treble prospects

Patrick McEleney has treble thoughts having just tasted double delight.

The Dundalk ace led the way in Friday’s 5-0 league rout of Finn Harps with two goals - his first of the campaign.

It was the perfect response to Tuesday’s disappointing exit from Europe at the hands of Slovan Bratislava.

Dundalk know the only way to get back into the Champions League next year is by winning the league title again.

They are closing in on retaining their crown but focus shifts to a week of cup competition - and a possible treble.

Tonight, the Lilywhites host Bohemians in a rearranged EA Sports Cup semi-final and then on Friday the FAI Cup holders travel to Derry City in the second round.

McEleney said: “We’re focused on domestic football now and we’re going to take care of business.

“It’s been highlighted that we want to win the treble and we’ll be doing everything we can to do that as we let it slide last year.”

Striker Georgie Kelly also scored in the win over Harps and could start tonight for the second game running.

That was his eighth goal in all competitions this season and he is relishing the ‘massive week’ ahead.

Kelly said: “To get a win over Harps was crucial and now it’s important to kick on in these two cup games.

“The treble is what we’re aiming for. We want to win all of the trophies that we can and this is the perfect week to bounce straight into it.”

Last season, Dundalk’s treble dreams were dashed at this stage of the EA Sports Cup when they were shocked 1-0 by First Division Cobh Ramblers in the semis.

But Kelly insists the lure of another cup final will drive Vinny Perth’s charges onwards against Bohs who travel in hope after smashing sorry UCD 10-1 on Friday.

“Hopefully tonight we can make another final before a tough tie heading up to Derry on Friday,” added Kelly. “We’re full of confidence.”
