Patrick Mahomes trying to learn all he can from new Chiefs backup QB Blaine Gabbert

The Kansas City Chiefs have a new player in the quarterback room and Patrick Mahomes is trying to learn everything he can from him.

Blaine Gabbert joins the Chiefs with 11 years of NFL experience to the table. The former No. 10 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft has appeared in 125 career games with 48 starts. He was a mentor for Chad Henne in Jacksonville. He also spent the last three seasons of his NFL career backing up Tom Brady in Tampa Bay.

Asked about Gabbert’s arrival in Kansas City, Mahomes made it clear that he’s looking to soak up all that he can from the veteran.

“Yeah, I mean first off I knew of Blaine (Gabbert) from (former Chiefs QB) Chad (Henne with) them playing in Jacksonville together and Chad spoke very highly of him,” Mahomes said. “And then since he’s been in the building, he’s been a true pro and he’s came in – you see the talent (and) you see why he was a top 10 draft pick or a first-round draft pick and the arm strength there and things like that. And he was just backing up (former Buccaneers QB) Tom (Brady) so I’m asking for any advice he can give me because if you’re learning from that guy, you’re learning from the right guy. So, (he’s) just another good quarterback (and) good guy that can be in that quarterback room.”

Mahomes has an immense amount of respect for Brady. The two have been connected ever since Mahomes took over as starting quarterback for the Chiefs in 2018. Learning anything he can from Gabbert is indirectly learning from Brady.

Andy Reid says that Mahomes and Gabbert have quickly formed a bond. It’s also not just about what Gabbert can teach Mahomes. The Chiefs have two other quarterbacks in the room — Shane Buechele and Chris Oladokun — who can learn plenty from the veteran signal-caller.
