Patrick Mahomes to practice, Chiefs not ruling him out for Sunday vs. Packers

It might be nothing more than a decoy, but the Kansas City Chiefs are keeping the door open for quarterback Patrick Mahomes to play Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers.

Mahomes, who dislocated his kneecap against the Denver Broncos last Thursday night, is scheduled to practice in an unknown capacity Wednesday, according to BJ Kissel of the Chiefs official site.

Coach Andy Reid hasn’t yet ruled out Mahomes for Sunday night.

Although Mahomes received good news about the severity of his injury, most believed he would need to miss at least 2-3 weeks before returning to play.

It’s possible the Chiefs are keeping the door open on Mahomes for no other reason than gamesmanship, using the reigning NFL MVP to ensure the Packers have to do their due diligence in preparing for the Kansas City offense with Mahomes under center.

It’s also possible the Chiefs believe Mahomes has a legitimate chance to play Sunday.

Veteran quarterback Matt Moore is Mahomes’ backup. The 35-year-old would start Sunday night if Mahomes can’t play.
