Patrick Mahomes throws first ever September interception, and a Ravens rookie set him up

Throughout his remarkable NFL career, Patrick Mahomes had never thrown an interception, or been involved in a losing game, in the month of September. The Chiefs were 11-0 in the month in games Mahomes has started, and that included Kansas City’s Week comeback win over the Browns last Sunday. And Mahomes had thrown 35 touchdowns to no interceptions in September, which included the three touchdown passes he threw in that 33-29 win over Cleveland.

Mahomes had thrown three more touchdown passes against the Ravens on Sunday Night Football, giving an incredible 38 touchdowns to no interceptions in the Septembers of his NFL career.

And then, with 2:09 left in the third quarter against Baltimore, Mahomes’ magic streak came to an end — and it was due to the efforts of a rookie edge defender who did three things perfectly to force Mahomes into an unfortunate throw. Odafe Oweh, the Penn State alum who the Ravens selected with the 31st overall pick (which they got from the Chiefs in the pre-draft trade for left tackle Orlando Brown Jr.), had a brilliant rep all around.

Oweh started the play by making Mahomes think he was covering Travis Kelce over the short middle, which took away Mahomes’ quick read. Then, Oweh took off for Mahomes, putting a nice move on center Creed Humphrey, a fellow rookie. And then, Oweh closed to Mahomes, who didn’t want to take the sack and forced an errant throw to Ravens cornerback Tavon Young.

Nice play by Young, but it was Oweh, the rookie who Baltimore got with a draft pick from the Chiefs, who ruined Patrick Mahomes’ perfect Septembers.
