Patrick Mahomes says Alex Smith was part of Chiefs’ Super Bowl win

Super Bowl MVP and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t afraid to remember those who helped get him to this point.

And Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith played a big role in that regard.

Just ask Mahomes, per ESPN’s Jenna Laine:

“He texted me right after the game, saying he enjoyed it just as much as we did. He wasn’t there, but he was part of it — I think that’s the biggest thing. He built the culture that I came into. He was the guy that led the team to all these successful seasons and built that winning culture.”

Smith served as the veteran starter during Mahomes’ rookie season before leaving the Chiefs and heading to the Redskins.

Since joining the Redskins, Smith has been hailed as a strong veteran presence for Dwayne Haskins, too. While Smith still wants to attempt a starting comeback, it’s clear his impact on those around him has helped uplift two key members of the next generation of quarterbacks.

Based on these comments and the sheer history of the situation, it will be interesting to see if Andy Reid and the Chiefs organization do anything for Smith after the Super Bowl win.

Current Redskins coach Ron Rivera hasn’t ruled out Smith as a starter again down the road.
