Patrick Mahomes named best first-round pick by Chiefs in past decade

Our friends at Touchdown Wire recently took a look at the best first-round picks for each team in the NFL over the last decade. Their choice for the Kansas City Chiefs was the NFL’s reigning MVP at quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Here’s what they had to say about Mahomes:

“There is no question Patrick Mahomes is the top pick in the 2010 decade by the Chiefs. It took one season as a starter to prove the 10th overall pick out of Texas Tech in 2017 is an elite quarterback.”

Mahomes is easily the top option here. Only one other first-round selection made in this decade remains on the team. The Chiefs truly had fewer options than a lot of other teams over the past decade. During that span, they’ve had seven first-round picks — and three general managers — and Mahomes is the only selection they’ve made in the first round in the past four seasons. Here’s a look at those seven draft picks:

The Chiefs didn’t have any picks in the first round in 2016, 2018 and this year. In 2016 they traded back and selected Chris Jones in the second round. They forfeited their 2018 pick in order to trade up for Mahomes in 2017. This year they traded their first-round pick in a deal to acquire Seahawks defensive end Frank Clark.
